Just a question on tyres - as 99% of my offroading will be on the beach/soft sand (not gravel and rocks), are the stock standard skinnys (deflated to 15psi) enough? Would wider, all terrains provide much more benefit other than looking better? I've been told that the standard alloys aren't really designed for a wider tyre so, to my mind, going wider means new alloys as well - an expensive move for perhaps not that much benefit?

All terrains won't offer any better performance over road biased tyres in sand. In fact the balder the better so as not to break up the surface. However the buttresses at the edge of the tyre tread can make a difference. What you need are tyres that float on the surface. The butressess help if you get into rutts. The standard skinnies work very well if you deflate them as you suggested. Beware though that running tyres this flat at speeds higher than 40kmh can cause the carcass to heat up and fail. Avoid the brakes, keep the power on and you should be fine. |
