Hi, I'm trying to remove the DEFENDER decal from the back of my car. I'm using the "heat and peel" method but it's taking for ever. After 30 mins or so I'm now the owner of a "DEFENDl" !! I'll be here all night at this rate.
Does anyone have any tips for removing decals? |

Hair drier works well, plus a good chemical to remove the glue. A blade is useful to start off, then heat and peel.

On the bodywork of a defender?! Heat gun, patience, then Autoglym tar and glue remover. As an aside, On plastic moulded decals, like the defender wording on the bonnet, fishing line is a good method of reomving the plastic, before attacking the adhesive pads left behind.. |

As others have said, heat gun or hair dryer, get it nice and warm and work from a corner and peel back at a shallow angle..I did mine and it didn't all come away in one piece, so when it breaks, apply more heat to the next section and so on, you should get it in about 10-15mins.
Please don't try anything else, even if you don't slip...the risk of damaging your paint work is too great. |

This will be so frustrating for you, but I literally peeled mine off last week with absolutely zero prep or effort! But it had only had 8 weeks to 'set' from new! Hairdryer works well mate... just take is slowly. Anything that is left can be removed with acetone and a clean rag.  YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

No prep for me neither. I just raised the end with a Stanley knife blade and very carefully and slowly peeled it off. Looked a bit bare afterwards so a few months later I replaced with the raised lettering.

3M make an adhesive remover however always be careful with solvents on paint work, do a test on some hidden paintwork.

ditto with the hair drier, white spirit for the glue remnants DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

A plastic putty knife won't cut into the paint work, use it instead of any metal tools.
The best thing to use is heat, and patience. Once the sticker is off, adhesive remover or Acetone and lots of patience. |

Haha! I think that's the basic problem - mine has had 7 years of high-UV New Zealand sun to bake it on!
The largest piece that I've got off so far is about the size of a fingernail! It seems especially prone to breaking at the boundary of the grey letters and clear background.
I'm using a plastic trim removal tool to help - I didn't want to risk anything metal. Ah well - back to the task this morning. I'm about half way there now. Thanks for all the tips folks! Last edited by AndyTunn on 29th Aug 2015 11:36pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I took the stripes off the side of my boat this year and found that warm, I could take a fair amount off in one go but overheat it and the plastic went brittle and snapped.
Maybe experiment a bit with the technique. My boat's over 10 years old, so it was well baked on. Best of luck! 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop Now a 2013 110 USW too. |
