Really easy to change, just unplug, unclip and I think it was one jubilee clip from memory Ray

You say the red plug has oil deposits. This may have worked itself into the ECU, so could it be oil in the ECU that is causing the problem with the MAF reading??

That was something I was considering. Would it be worth unbolting the ECU, removing the 4 x torn scores from the lid and having a look inside the ECU or am I going to create more problems by doing that?
I don't really want to by an new MAF (OEM £75, LR £130+) to find out the issue is elsewhere. As I say, it drives well, we had a good outing yesterday and it sat at 75 on the motorway quite comfortably for the 15 miles we were on it. The MAF is currently unplugged as per when I picked it up. 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver 1995 110 CSW 300TDi - SOLD |

As you have not had the motor for long you dont know how long oil has been leaking through the wires so therefore the ECU may be contaminated.
I am not sure of the procedure for removing the ECU cover but it may be worth a look. Some other more knowledgable forum user may tell you if you are opening a can of worms. |

Dave,
That was my thinking - I like to know where I stand. Not wanting to get ahead of myself but if I do find oil in there - what do people recommend to clean it out? As per the plug i.e. brake cleaner and let it dry? I know how much ECUs cost so I don't want to it - particularly when it's all working fine!!!!! Sometimes I wish I was more along the lines of 'if it ain't broke, don't mess with it'! Tom. 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver 1995 110 CSW 300TDi - SOLD |

Just seen the censored symbol! I didn't think I was that rude but a clever function!
If I scr£w the ECU then I will be employing that function a little more!!!! 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver 1995 110 CSW 300TDi - SOLD |

I was curious enough to take the cover off mine last year as I had quite a lot of oil at the plug but I needn't have bothered, the PCB was as clean as a whistle. The pins from the socket on the outside have quite a difficult journey to get to the board, the thing would have to be upside down for a while to get oil to track through. I had the plug quite contaminated at the time and like you I was concerned but after seeing the arrangement of the setup I was satisfied.
I would just stick to washing out the plug and socket with electrical contact cleaner and if handy, an airline. |

Thanks - we will see how long I can ignore the curiosity. Certainly changing the loom seems have stopped the source.

Just keep an eye on the red plug for the next week or so to "chase" out any residue of oil

I replaced mine a few months ago after driving around with the old one disconnected for a few months.
Haven't noticed any difference in performance, fuel consumption or otherwise between having the old broken sensor, disconnected sensor or new working sensor. All numbers as expected via nanocom in all cases so sure it's working as expected. |

If I'm honest I can't see any difference either but it has got to be better for the engine and I don't like things not working - despite the associated cost! 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver
