As long as you have considered the pitfalls as well...putting the keys in your pocket and walking off up the street only for the vehicle to unlock itself unknown to you 100 metres away because the button in your pocket was accidently pressed. Maybe a limited range is actually more of a security feature than you think. |

A point worth considering, but 100m is wishful thinking!
Mine is around 10m and no different to my wife's "normal" car. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My first job involved driving from Southampton to Wick in a 300TDI (twice) The experience of 3000 miles in a Defender has never left me (for many reasons!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Was this an issue with earlier models? My June 2014 90XS has a comfortable range of 8-10m which is more than adequate.

Well I'm pleased with my saturdays work Grill mod stolen
 trucklite LED's fitted grill & headlight panels painted now time for a takeaway and a drink feet up job done. thanks again Chiversn great idea.

I would love to do this but have a few questions.
Where do you get santorini black paint from? What technique do you use to get a perfect finish like shown? I'm assuming primer, colour and laquer? Do you wet and dry between coats? |

You can get the paint from any decent body shop supplier. LKQ being just one example
http://www.lkqcoatings.com Modern paint system are 'base coat' and 'lacquer'. The base coat being the colour. For an area like a grill (which is going to prone to wear) you really should be using a 2 pack lacquer. Such lacquers generally contain Isocyanates and should not be sprayed without the correct environmental controls/ppe as its carcinogenic. There are water based systems but these are really not suitable for DIY use imho. You can also still get single pack cellulose lacquers from a few very limited sources but they're really not up to the job and VOC regs changes meant that you'll struggle to buy anything branded from a mainstream automotive supplier. My honest advice is that if you don't have any experience of spraying you may be better to find a local small indy bodyshop to paint it for you. If you remove the grill and ensure its nice and clean ready for them to prep and paint it should not cost you too much and probably not much more than your cost by the time you've bought all the materials you're going to need. Having said that if you're looking for an excuse to learn a new skill and buy yet more equipment for your garage let me know and I'll try and knock you together an equipment / materials list |

Imho painting a grill is not a difficult job if you take your time and do the prep work, there is loads of info out around as well as on here . I used Autotek paints 1 etch primer 2 gloss black 1clear coat panel wipe after sanding tack cloth before paint , because there not big body panels good results can be achieved even if your not that gifted with a spray gun (i no I'm not).

I did mine using Land Rover Java black that is available in spray tins at Halfords. It's not a world away from Santorini black. On the grill I'd doubt you'd tell the difference. Quick sand down, grey undercoat, Java Black, then clear laquer over the top. Amazing the difference it makes to what was a very washes out plastic look.
Just take your time, don't spray to much on in one go. |
