You definitely want to be staying with South African roof tents such as Howling Moon, Hannibal and Ezi Awn.
We are the UK's Sole Importer of Howling Moon tents and accessories and have been dealing with them for almost 15 years. If you have any questions regarding them we would be happy to speak to you about them. We also often have second hand items in stock so its always worth the call just to find out if we have and preowned products at discounted prices.

We are obviously heavily biased towards the Howling Moon brand but as long as you are going for a South African tent you wont be disappointed.

A quick overview of a Howling Moon Tourer tent:

    380-400 gms/sqm polyester/cotton ripstop material with advanced water-repellent coating

    Teflon coated

Lightweight vacuum laminated composite base construction

    Aluminium mounting extrusion supplied

Heavy Duty Zip operated, ventilated and insect screened windows

Two-piece ladder, flysheet and three-inch-thick high density mattress come standard

    Internal storage pockets

Sufficient space for bedding when tent is folded

Unique bungee cord system to assist in packing up of tent

Flysheet folds away with tent. Ventilated space between flysheet and main body eliminates condensation

    Optional attachable annex

    Covered entrance

Here is a link to more information on Howling Moon tents.

Alternatively you can call us on +44 (0)1751 430 693 and we can talk you through what is best for your needs and price range.

Here is also a link to a Water Test we did at Billing Show a couple of years ago. Thumbs Up

Oh what a fine looking Defender and Roof Tent Bow down Wink

Pic taken at Darlington Park, southern Queensland, near the NSW border, Mid-June 2014. Had spent 4 months living in the Defender/roof tent by this point. We now think of it as our second home! When we got it out of the shed a few weeks ago and mounted it back on the Defender and climbed up the ladder, is was like coming home, like putting on your fave snugly jumper! Love it, off away for a week touring in Northumberland later this month.

Anyone see our Howling Moon tent on the last episode of Top Gear featuring Clarkson, Hammond and May?

Yes, spotted it straight away! And the MSS drawer?

Had a sharp intake of breath when they said they were rolling off the cliff - oh no, don't destroy a perfectly good tent! Dave (other half) thought they may have made a mock-up to go under the cover, but when it went over, and half came off, looked like the real thing ! What a waste ! lol Laughing Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

Was that really a brand new tent they bought from you?

Seems such a waste, or did you get it back afterwards?

We can confirm it was 100% a genuine Howling Moon tent. There was no mocking up a fake one when it went down the hill that Jeep landed on a Howling Moon tent and in all honesty it didn't look THAT damaged afterwards.

And yes it was a Mobile Storage Systems drawer in the back as well Smile Shame we didnt see more of it tbh but at least it was there and in the view of 300 million people.

New to the LR experience so sorry for the dumb question but I have a LR expedition roof rack system on a 110, can I fit a Howling Moon or other tent on this type of roof rack? Looking at the shape I don't think so but rather ask the experts Very Happy than guess.

I wonder why Uncle Ray is whistling quietly to himself? Whistle

You could do what Uncle Ray says but you are making the vehicle even taller and raising the centre of gravity. Neither of those things are exactly brilliant things to do.

You might repeat might be able to get a hard shell tent such as a Maggiolina to sit inside the rack, however might be awkward to get to catches and you might have a trip hazard as well from the luggage rail.

If you want a roof tent consider say 2 or 3 roof bars or a flat rack such as the Patriot.

the other way is to cut out the bar so the tent will open out but re fit the tube when the tent is not on with a small internal pipe fitting that will expand when it get tightened back up RLD fabricator of Hidden Winch Mount for D3/4 roof racks jerry can holders CB aerial mounts and much more and agent for Helsport Tents and gear

Thanks for the suggestions, you have both left me with some ideas to resolve the issue.

Cheers
