Hot and Cold Tdi
Hello all!

Bit of an ongoing issue here.

In the winter when it is cold, my 110 runs very cold. As a 200tdi this is not too much of a surprise but but after about a 10 mile run it is about up to temperature.

However, now that it is summer time, it seems to sit very hot at around 3/4 of the gauge (with 0 being cold and 4/4 being overheat)

I have bled the system many times but this dosn't seem to be the problem.

Last year replaced the Viscous fan coupling (admittedly with a pattern part but an apparently good one)

The Radiator was replaced with a replacement alloy version 3 years ago which has been great and isn't leaking.

There is a very slight coolant loss, from half way up expansion tank to bottom quarter over a 4 week period.

I have double checked all of the earth points and they are all sound and voltages look fine.

The heater matrix isn't leaking (as far as I can tell or blocked but again, how can I tell)

Where do I start?

What do we think?

Can you get a radiator flush? Does it help?

Thermostat stuck half open ?

stuck half open would give long warm up time in winter as it has to warm all the water in the system not just primary system + stuck half would give hot running as it wont allow full flow to cool in summer

I have replaced the Thermostat with a genuine one last year when it was playing up but thats no guarantee these days Sad

It feels like it is opening ok it just never feels like the fan is up to much.

When cold it roars away and then dies down but when its very hot on opening the bonnet it is no way near as ferocious as when first started.

if you look at the picture , your see one has extra part on the bottom , one doesn't , but same part number

you normally find both will fit and be same temp range , but will give very different results due to the extra bit if needed

sorry but I cant remember if a 200tdi needs the extra bit or not , it is possible to check if you take thermostat out and look down the hole

the extra bit shuts a hole off when thermostat opens , and opens hole up when thermostat shuts

I have ordered a new thermostat from Turners as they know there stuff!

I had a very very very hot and sticky drive home in my 110 tonight. When I got home I checked all the hoses and the radiator top hose was too hot to hold. The bottom hose was more comfortable but still very hot so I can deduce that the Thermostat is opening and allowing coolant through the radiator.

The fan however didn't seem to be up to much. I could stop it very easily with my fingers and it wasn't really roaring or seemed to be blowing much.

I stopped the engine and tried rotating it and it seems quite free so I suspect its the viscous fan which is a real pain because they are so expensive for a genuine part Big Cry

My old 200tdi i fitted a electric fan and done away with viscous altogether , fitted auto switch and overide switch , so if towing and hill coming up i could switch on ready

I have considered going down the Kenlowe route but I want to try and keep the engine bay as original as possible.

Cant remember as a few years ago now

no need to alter anything under the bonnet

i did leave all the rad cowling out , but you could leave it all in place if you wished

getting tempted to do my tdci now

OK little update on this....

Fitted a new replacement OEM viscous fan and found that there was a load of orange goo coming out the back of the old one which to me indicates it wasn't up to much. New one fitted to hot engine locked up immediately and produced a torrent of air. Good job Thumbs Up

This morning drove to work and while it was running cooler it was still not quite right sat about 2mm from the red.

Now thinking of changing the temp sender as its the only thing I havn't changed yet. Other than that I'm at a loss

never had the viscous fan lock up on my 200tdi and always gauge sat just below centre , that was when towing etc

I did have a 4 core rad made for it , but only after fitting bigger turbo etc

you never run out of things to change on a defender Whistle

might worth changing the sender , but if its reading hot in the summer then I would think it should read hotter in the winter ( I think you said it reads colder ) it should still read hotter then it is no matter what tempeture is outside if the sender was knackered

you can get senders that are all different ranges I know , but sure if that's the problem

have you checked thermostat is right one ?

might be time to get tempeture checked on a separate gauge

Very True Laughing

I meant I have run out of things in the cooling system to change as I have now changed

1x Radiator (Oem)
1x Water Pump (genuine parts)
2x Viscous Fans (beamach then Oem)
3x Thermostats (all 88'c) (Genuine)
2x Coolants (while flushing out) (Halfords)

The only thing I haven't done is the Temp Sender as I didn't want to change too much at once. As you say, in the winter it was struggling to get up to temp and was using a rad muff to help get warm. Even with the muff in it would sit quite happily in the center.

I don't have a spare gauge to try it on otherwise I would have done Sad

I'm just really worried about damaging the head as they are hens teeth at the moment and you cant get them new any more and don't really want to buy a whole engine to cannibalize it for parts Sad
