Cant be too careful with the alignment, it is bad enough swinging a car engine around trying to get it to go in but the TD5 is quite a lump, I used some dummy bolts to help i.e. get some longer bolts and cut the heads off then when you have the engine close just screw them through the bell house holes into the corresponding engine threaded hole and use them to guide the thing together.
If you decide to do this take care not to twist or put too much force on the bell housing the flange is only Aluminium.

Hi, all bolted in and mated up ok second time. The load leveler really helps ! Going to the Netherlands for a Rave tomorrow so should be able to get back to it sunday. Just coolant pipes and fuel left to go.

So far I have managed this completely single handed.

Update:

Well the engine is all in, plumbed and wired complete with full ERG delete including the cooling circuit. Will it prime? Not on your nelly.

Down goes the fuel tank, about a wheelbarrow full of powdered mud all over me. Pump out and as I thought the internal filter completely covered in diesel bug. Drained the last of the fuel and that is also seriously contaminated. Tank jet washed and getting the full chemical treatment, then new filter, prime and off we go. hopefully.......

Whilst I was at it td5 clutch mod done as well.

It's a really credit to you by the way to accomplish what you have with your engine - kudos !

So, just pulled the rocker cover as it was sounding like a bag of spanners and had low oil pressure. Coolant contamination has turned the oil to jelly. Not knowing if the head is cracked and the machine shop did not test it properly or the block is cracked I have gone for a 66k defender td5 from a 2006 model. Bloody expensive saga Sad

Thought I would update this:

Results from the oil analysis are in. Everything pointing to a slow coolant leak into the oil.

I have flushed the system and the engine is running very sweetly, but as much as it pains me there is a definite leak so it has to come back out.

Head will come off in the next fortnight and new engine will go in.

Any advice on mating up the new engine with my old ECU via the NANOCOM appreciated.

New engine....

60,000 miles. Looks good but I will only know how good it is when I fire it up. Need to swap the intake and exhaust manifolds but I am leaving everything else for a few thousand miles before I decide if it needs any seals etc. e

Old engine out in 2 hours on my own! Pretty happy with that. Now I need to wait for a pair of engine mounts to arrive as mine have a lot of play. Big Cry
