Gear box noise
Hi ,
Got a bearing type noise.
When changing between 5th to 6th at over 50mph.
Also when feathering the throttle at the same kind of speed too.
Once its taken up the "slack" no noise.
Lower speeds fine ,no clunking on changing up or down.
Checked drive flanges, all ok.
Is it the spigot bearing or something more serious ? Big Cry

Drive line noise
I have a noise that sounds similar to yours, when in 6th and feathering the throttle/operating the cruise control there is a rumbling bearing type noise when all at operating temp, has done this now for around 40000 k’s. I suspect it is in the transfer, advise given from LR garage is to leave and “see what develops”. Possible not the best solution, however it does not seem to get worse. I use Penrite 80-90 5 full synthetic oil. I am considering to change to automatic and it will need attention if this is what I do as the transfer is used to bolt onto the auto. This may or may not help you but I have posted the same type of problem and received not answers. WMcA Brisbane Australia

I had the same issue on my previous 110, never got to the bottom of it (useless dealer) but did not get worse over 85K miles, my current 110 does not do it.
The input gear and centre diff bearings are shimmed for the correct preload and I think that some may be 'loose' from the factory.
My mates hybrid had the same noise but got very loud and eventually needed new transfer box bearings.

got exactly the same noise, almost a quite hum as feathering the accelerator. but only in 6th gear! surely gearbox related?

Noise in drive line Puma 2008
It is more noticeable in 6th gear obviously because it is the cruising gear, check to see if you can replicate it in 5th, I feel sure it is transfer related and is more audible when at operating temp. I have had three different oils, started with the original fill, changed at 10000k’s with OEM oil, still the same, changed again to “Penrite" (Au company) 75-85 full synthetic GL5-6, still there, however has improved about 30%. Owing to a leaking drain plug in transfer had to do it again, the oil is $65au for two litres. A lot of oil supplies do not seem to have synthetic GL4 grade in stock, I use this in gearbox and have now done 40000 k’s, to date operating very well in all conditions without any noise at all. The vehicle is mainly used for towing caravan, 2.5 tonne plus equipment in sometimes 40c heat, this is when the “float noise” is more prevalent. As advice previously it a suck and see project at this point. WMcA Brisbane Australia

I have exactly the same .. at certain speeds in 6th when coming off the throttle. It was made much worse when I changed the suspension and lowered it a little to the point where I had to come up an inch on the rear springs. I can only think that it didn't like the change in angle of the rear prop and that was putting some pressure on the output from the transfer box. Who knows? .. I now just put up with it occasionally mainly when I have a heavy load in the back.

This must be slightly different to the problem you guys are describing, I have listened for it in every other gear and defiantly cannot hear it unless in 6th? Which is what lead me to the thought that it has to be gearbox? If it was tho, and it's a bearing then it would happen in other years too on that are on the same shaft?!? I really don't know, not bothered really, until it goes boom...

My tdci had all the usual clunks when changing gear however about 10 days ago it started making a more violent clunk mostly fel when changing down when aproaching roundabout/junction etc when transmission would go slack and drive was taken up again. Gears were smooth when driving with no rumbling or vibration etc. Got my brother to sit in it and let it roll forward gently and then slowly release the clutch to take up the slack the same clunk was heard on two or three occaisons and the last time there was a horrendous grinding sound and it would not drive. Grinding sound was now in every gear increasing thru gears, (in hi an low) but silenced by putting transfer lever in neutral. Taken it to local indepentant garage but cant look at it till tuesday. Just wondering if anybody had had simular experiance or any ideas what it could be. Shaft from tranfer to gearbox failed bearing??
