Td5 Turbo bearing play
Hi
I was doing the perennial job of freeing off the turbo waste gate. and notice a slight bit of play on the turbo shaft. Should there be any play at all and if so how much. You can see the shaft moving side to side a bit. Its a 2001 Defender and the engine has done 70k miles. Which does not seem a lot. There is no mechanical sound from the turbo only a beautiful whistle

If I do need a new turbo have you any recomendations and also problems to be expected when fitting

Thanks

Side to side play is perfectly normal and is allowable so long as the blades of the compressor wheel don't touch the housing. It'll be straight when its spinning trust me Thumbs Up . Endfloat on the other hand is not allowable and worth checking for. To get an indication of carbon buildup spin the shaft with your fingers in the direction of rotation and feel how free it is, then spin it backwards. If you feel a lot of 'drag' on the backward spin start thinking about replacement in the future.

Post a video up of the play if you want and I'll take a look Thumbs Up

Thanks a lot Fat Boy Slim. Thats taken a weight off my mind and wallet.
Sooooo post a video!!!! That will be a learning experience.
I have been reading up on turbos and it seems they run on a floating bearing so there is no friction at all. So there has to be a gap where the metal parts run on a film of oil I presume this why I can feel a radial movement? There is no axial movement. If I cannot get a video sorted I will check movement with dti or feeler guages and post the results.

The side float measured on a DTI = .007" to .008" although the shaft will flex a few thou more if slight side pressure is applied. . This is probably because the bearing is located inboard of the impeller.
There is no axial movement on the DTI.
The impeller misses the casing sides by about .003" when side pressure is applied (Its difficult to measure because the inlet casing curves just after the start of the blades).
Hopefully you will be able to view a video soon
