Anyone had a warped manifold on a Td5?
I've not got one - yet - but I think it'd be a good idea to get my studs and manifold done before I do get a problem, wondered if anyone's used a good engineer to skim the face and remove the webbings?

I'm sure I read somewhere that IRB do a skimmed and modified manifold on an exchange basis.

Might be worth trying to get hold of them to see what the cost is ?

Yes, thanks Bob, might be hard to get hold of them though. I found one on ebay but it's £175 for a skimmed and de-webbed, then you get £30 for an exchange, so £145. I just thought it sounded a tad expensive?

You can't get yours "done" now because it has not yet warped, so all you would be doing is skimming a flat thing flat and replacing good studs, that will cause more damage when the your manifold does warp. You have a couple of easy options, wait till yours warps then deal with it, or buy a manifold that has already warped and go through the process. There is also buying an uprated manifold, but that's very costly.

I just let mine warp, then ground out webbs, got it machined it flat, replaced ALL the studs and up sized the two pairs at each end. Refitt, all good after that.

Cheers Andy, the ones that are offered on ebay have warped, so at least that's kind of a good thing.
I might go for it and get one, is there any performance to be had or does it run better without the webbing?

I believe in preventative maintenance but for me - this is too far. The failure rate even on stage 1 mapped Td5's is low enough that you are likely to never have a problem.

I put 50k miles on my last td5 with a stage 1 BAS tune before the vehicle was written off in an accident. I wouldn't hesitate to go for a stage 1 map again without touching the manifold again.

As above, I would deal with it when and if it happens. Yes I've had a stage 1 map done on mine by J E Engineering about 5 years ago and yes my manifold did warp but it took 3 years before it did. Personally the only thing that I would consider doing is to perhaps upgrade the manifold studs to the Merc ones, mainly as they are slightly longer and grip in the head but just replacing the studs for new ones anyway would probably lessen the chance of them snapping. It's the failure of the studs that is the cause of the problem allowing the manifold to warp, when mine warped I just replaced the studs, I didn't touch the manifold, just tightened it back up and it's been fine ever since.
You get warning of problems by a squeal from the escaping gasses much like the squeal of a damaged V belt or just check the manifold studs when you check the oil etc
You don't need to fix what isn't broke or you'd have bought a Japanese motor instead.

Cheers for the replies, if I replace the studs with Wurth/Merc ones - do you have to widen the end holes on the outer 2 cylinders? I've heard of people doing this when getting it machined flat again?

Landrover produce an upgrade stud kit for the TD5 which is meant to help stop the warping.

Land Rover part number is TE108052 which supersedes TE108051 and TE108051L

I would not fit stronger studs. I believe warping cast iron is stronger than a thred in an Ali head, and when the manifold warps it will rip the studs from the head rather than just snap them.

To me it's a job you either do fully, (fit re machined warped manifold), or leave and see if it happens.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm almost looking for things to do at the moment, I need a proper job! I think I'll get a warped, skimmed one and fit it with the Wurth/Merc stud kit, just for peace of mind and one less thing to worry about, plus it'll entertain me for half a day!

Hi, I had the dreaded screeching on my old td5, replaced that with the de webbed one from the eBay seller, nicely finished piece of kit, fitted easily, standard studs as already warped!!.. Did a few hundred miles after no probs til aircon wouldn't work.. You guessed it the core plug under the manifold was leaking!.. All off again and no probs from then on..

Hth...
Cheers. Alex

My old 2005 90 was JE Stage 2 mapped, with I/C and straight through exhaust. It never warped, and had it from new. Didn't drive it slowly either Wink Pete

Mine warped on a non-tuned (as far as I know!) Td5 Disco and took three studs with it. I bought a skimmed manifold for £60 delivered off eBay and fitted the Wurth studs which meant that the swap could be done the same day. The stubs are M8, I ran a 8mm drill thought the centre pair of holes (it cleared anyway, a 9mm through the next ones and an 10mm thought the outer just to give a bit of room, there's plenty of meat left then.

I'm planning to de-web my warped one myself, get it skimmed and paint it then put it back on eBay. The price that the "performance" ones are advertised for will put me back in pocket Thumbs Up
