@ Paul55 The crossmember is a fabricated part of the chassis, it is not removable. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

I last did mine 2 years ago, it was the first time it was done since new.

2 years on and it's still looking good with only a small amount of paint fade. The front bumper needs doing so I'll be giving it another going over at the same time.

If it's really bad, then you might need to sand it down rather than wire wool, but suspect it's just very minor being so new.

If you're talking about the rear crossmember, in a word no it is part of the chassis and short of plasma cutting or angle grinding it off, it aint going anywhere.

I covered mine in Dinitrol 3125 from day one and after 4 years it's still like new, it doesn't actually look all that bad, certainly better than loads of corrosion....

Hello Paul55

Cutting off completely is only for the brave, doable but you need kit and knowledge you say yours is
'just going on the ends'... if its rotten then it will need attention sooner or later,
LRM Magazine has just covered this Parts 1 and 2, cutting off and then welding on a replacement.

Selective patching up with is also possible if its not too far gone, but if your just talking about
respraying it then do that in situ.

If your welding on a new x member you can do most of the internal and external protection before
welding it on, keeping away from the weld lines then finish off these areas when in place. SKIP

I tidied mine up a couple of years ago as it had worn thin at the ends. I rubbed it down with a fine wet and dry paper then applied an etch primer followed with a couple of coats of black smooth right which gives a gloss finish so washes nicely (on the odd occasion I wash it) I use the car every day and looks as good as the day I did it. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Hi familymad, i think i may have mislead a few people on my post, the cross member is rusting but only surface rust and not as bad as i thought, just a wire brush some fine paper and all should be well Thumbs Up the reason i asked about if the rear cross member was easy to take off was because i wanted to dinitrol thoroughly all over Smile again many thanks for all replies Cogito ergo sum

Wire wooled mine and just covered with a Plasticote rattle can 2 years ago - still keeps fine. A wee rub over with ACF50 once in a while and it's been fine.

Mine is going a little milky.

So assuming not covered in the corrosion warranty but surely it's covered under the 3 year manufacturers warranty?

I got mine done under the 3 year warranty.
They argued that it was part of the chassis and so not covered, but I persuaded them that it should be counted as bodywork because it's visible. It took a couple of calls to and fro-ing, but LR eventually paid for it to be repainted, and the body shop they used did a very nice job.
