R380 Gearbox Advice Please
Ok, so gearbox has been noisy for a while, mainly in 5th under load. Time to do something about it.

I currently have a suffix J on my Defender 90 300tdi. The question is do I upgrade to suffix L and spend the extra £100 or stick with like for like. Defender is used a lot off-road but not uprated in any way.

Spoke to Ashcroft today, girl offered me to take the option of Input Gear & Bearings as well, she did say these would be refundable if not required. Clutch will be done and I'll proably get the transfer box serviced when it's off.

Obviously Ashcroft have a great name and most likely who I will go with but just thought I'd call on experience before I break the bank.

So who's done this mod, any advice welcome Thumbs Up 2007 Defender Puma Tonga Green

Yep, happy to upgrade to suffix L as I believe it has a stronger main shaft? Not sure i need the rear HD support bearing or the 5th gear ratio upgrade. As I say it's not tuned in any way and I don't tow, happy to consider it though.

The question would be, do I need the suffix L box and the HD support bearing....not sure? Don't have any knowledge of this stuff?

I think my g/box failure was caused by the 5th gear bearing, so when I did mine, I opted for the bearing upgrade. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Having spoken to Dave today I'll be going for like for like gearbox Suffix J and input gear/bearings. No requirement for upgraded HD bearing based on what I use it for.

Starting the strip out this weekend. Issue with 5th gear but new one should be good for 80/90k miles so good for me. Thumbs Up

Thanks also to Dave for your advice. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up 2007 Defender Puma Tonga Green

5th gear bearing Dave not the gearbox itself. Not sure when mine actually failed but the Defender had 102k on it when I bought it so sounds about right.

Only time will tell but I'm only covering upto 3k a year on mine so should last a while. 2007 Defender Puma Tonga Green
