TD5 Crossmember
Last month the Defender went thru the MOT fine and as I don't tow the crossmember was "OK" for the MOT man but it was an Advisory.

I am surprised at how quick it rotted through in the "pockets"which just attract the crud and around the jacking points. Two years ago there were a few rust spots; now it is like a kit kat wrapper.

I bled through my eyes, ears and nose when I was quoted £900 for the whole job by a local independent LR specialist in Cambridgeshire but it needs to be done and I gather with the TD5 that it has to be cut back to just in front of the rear spring mounts with the added complication of the fuel tank.

Does that price appear to be in the ball park for the whole job?

For the cost of travelling and quality of work, you can get one much cheaper with Black Sheep Off Road. Yes he does still do crossmembers, and they are better than any other type you can buy, and the rust traps are sealed off.

The website seems to be down at the moment, but you can contact Clive at the following

I was aware of Black Sheep but he closed his business and stopped trading earlier this year. A pity as his stuff looked very good. Blott

It is so confusing about whether he actually closed. He was due to move workshop in September this year, given we are still in September, I will be amazed if he's given up already. It's worth ringing that number to find out. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

Thanks I will give him a call. It looks as if he has had a change of heart as he had been ill and lost his premises earlier in the year so posted that he had packed up. Blott

I did indeed close for a few weeks timeline as follows 1, have shock off tig welder and shut down half my heart and end up a bit ill Shocked 2, tell person who is customer in my precision engineering side about situation who promptly tells my landlord I am dead and he should sell my unit to him and not me Evil or Very Mad 3 purchase goes through and new landlord puts up my rent but still expects me to do his work Laughing 4. I try and find a new premises to no avail so I thjink stuff it. 5 Go to local kawasaki dealer to get filter for my bike to find he has retired but he will give me a good deal on the workshop area so decide to reopen my engineering side Mr. Green 6 get email off someone I dont even know demanding me to give them my designs , dxf files contacts etc and im a selfish basket if I dont , which makes me think RIGHT IM DOING BLACK SHEEP again! Cool

Just on the price quoted, thought I'd share my latest experience.

Had some donut run in the back of me the other week, and as you can imagine the crossmember did a sterling job in taking one for the team.

Anyway a quick call to the insurance company and the Landy is whisked to the local repair shop. The extent of the damage was mainly bent crossmember, plus some cosmetic work to the rear corner. Total price £4,500!!!!

Blacksheep no more?
So what went wrong this time Clive?

I paid for a crossmember back in October, should have been delivered early November and we stripped my Defender down to the bare chassis for galvanising after the new crossmember........ One broken promise after another, no response to phone calls or emails and finally a one line email to say he is going out of business again. Big let down!

Still waiting for that refund you promised Clive! www.AllPackedUp.com

I wish you had checked your bank account before posting no refund.

Secondly it was a one off prototype that needed mucking about to get it working with a winch, shutting the back door and fitting a td5 tank back in, not make one and sling it in the post

The refund came through after I posted, it's a shame I had to post to get it!

Secondly, you knew what you were taking on and you assured me you could deliver on time!

It's a shame you are going out of business again as there is clearly a demand for a decent product at a reasonable price but communication is key when dealing with customers and people soon see through waffle & Censored ! www.AllPackedUp.com
