235/85/16 vs 235/70/16 BFG AT KO's thoughts please?
currently have Original boost alloys fitted 235/85/16 BFG AT's fitted

but looking to buy some sawtooth alloys and wondering about fitting 235/70/16 tyres instead

any pro & cons for this?

TD5 90 and is mainly used on-road with a little off-road but nothing serious

The rolling ratio would be out by nearly 9 percent.
Your speedo will be out.


Overall diameter: 806mm 235.85.16

Overall diameter: 735mm 235.70.16

Difference in diameter: -8.81%Actual diameter change: -71mm We recommend a MAXIMUM of +/- 2.5% difference

Lower profile so will be marginally less vague round corners but have a harsher ride. Whether you'd notice or not I have no idea.

235/85=31.7" diameter and 100" circumference
235/70=29.0" diameter and 91" circumference
Back of the envelope, doesn't take in to account the real world etc etc but that's a noticeable drop in diameter. You go 10% further on the 85s than you do on the 70s per revolution. That's a fair change to the gear ratio.

You're also going to reduce ground clearance by over an inch and reduce your traction, but you say that probably won't matter. The other thing is a reduction in unsprung mass which is a good thing, again I have no idea if you'd notice.

Personally I think that 235/70R16 tyres would look absurdly small on a Defender.

235/70 is only marginally taller (1") than the old 600x16 tyres fitted to Series SWBs and early 90s, albeit half as wide again as a 6.00 (at 9.25").

I am not sure what benefit you expect, or are looking for, but a 235/85 would in my opinion look and perform better all round.

A friend has 245/70s or 245/75s on his and they do look a bit odd and they're bigger.

Fitting 235/70/16s to your Td5 will reduce the already low gearing even further by about 10 per cent, not something I would choose to do ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

If you are thinking of getting new BG Goodrich KOs, then in case you haven't noticed they have just released an updated version, the KO2. It was out in America at the beginning of the month but I've yet to find a local supplier to the UK. I'm first in the queue though!

superb thanks to all i'll just stick with the 235/85/16 profile then and use the tyres i have fitted already on the new alloys
