TD5 engine bay noise
Hi All,

Took my some time to buy one but bought my first Defender three months ago and I'm already at it.

There's a nasty noise coming from underneath the hood, to me it sounds different than just a worn drive belt.

Could it be the tensioner? ...or worse? ....what do you guys think?

Regards, JJ

Hard to tell.....but to me engine sounds fine internally , there is no belt to worry about as TD5 is chain driven.

Sounds external... aircon pulley I bet or altenator bearing or water pump

Been through this before.

Initially thought it was the viscous fan bearing, but after removing belt noise was gone.

Borrowed a mechanic’s stethoscope and scoped the prime suspects (alternator, PAS pump, AC comp, idler pulley, etc.). The belt tensioner sounded a bit too raspy, and whilst not entirely convinced changed it out for a new unit (p/n ERR6951). Screeching gone.

Cheers
Matt

Good advice, could very well be the tensioner. Seems the noise comes from the upper part of the engine, so that coincides with the tensioner.

I've read the belt can be a pain to get on, will let you know how I get on and if I it was indeed the culprit.

Is it worth going with a genuine replacement or am I ok with aftermarket? (£17 vs £48 )

Genuine all the way. When I did my belt I did it from underneath with my mate holding the spring pully as I couldn't do it without his help. You could take to viscous fan off which makes access easier!!

I see I forgot to get back too you... cliffhanger.

It was indeed the tensioner.

For others; best not drive the car a lot before you fix it, the tensioner will freeze up and leave you stranded sooner or later.
