300tdi Not Starting - click click
I read some other forums first and I don't have a 'spider' that I'm aware of

I've got an'83 110 fitted with a 300tdi. Last week the starter didn't work. I heard a click in the dash. I hit the solenoid and it worked. Then it didn't the next time. I pulled the starter and solenoid apart. I just received my solenoid from UK today and put it all back in - hope the wiring is correct - see photo. Battery is big red on the silver terminal, Brown and starter on the copper terminal and switched on the spade. It's well grounded and clean.

It still goes click under the dash. I checked the switched wire to the spade and it has power upon ignition but no go. I replaced the two relays with new Bosch ones and it's just a different sounding click. It's maddening.

What do I look at now?

Thank you!

I had the same type of issue with my 200TDI. Turned out to be cheap battery clamps from China, they looked ok but the screws holding the cable in the clamp would work lose, or at least once i changed them out for decent ones I seem to have had no issues...........probably fail to start now i've typed this Confused

Take it out and use jump leads to test it all works direct from the battery. 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

The spider that you mention is fitted to Discovery 1's and can cause starting problems. As DaveT says pull it back of and couple it up to a battery and run it on a bench. Give it a spray round with electrical contact cleaner

Also check you have a good earth from the battery. A quick way to do this is place a jump lead on the negative terminal and the other clamp on a good earth point engine, chassis etc.

Very strange. I pulled out the starter again. Bench tested it and could only bypass the solenoid to get the starter moving. I removed the solenoid, looked at it and put it back on, bench tested it again and it worked with the solenoid. Installed it and it works fine. Odd. The only thing I did was 'think' it would work this time! lol

Thanks for the info... now on to all the other problems.
