Had my new Genuine steel wheels delivered by Dan (duckworths) very pleased with them heavy duty and much better then the bearmac alternatives I looked at, there really is a huge difference from genuine and the £40 offerings, I have had a really good look around and checked a lot of alternatives , off to paint tomorrow black ral 9005. The extra discount was also appreciated Thanks Dan Thumbs Up

Would you be willing to measure the thickness of steel used - thinking of ericv and grouse figures in earlier posting?

Keith presents pictures of temptation for our delectation ........ I must resist ..... I must resist .... I must ....

Regarding buying new Wolfs - Buyer beware said the man on the interwebby - three versions currently appear to be on sale as of today - the unrated (???? kg) version the 1080 kg rated version and the 1500 kg rated version - can find no trace of a 2200 kg or 3500 kg rated Wolf steel rim openly on sale.

Britpart, Bearmach and Allmakes seem to be the key suppliers to the trade. If anyone else can add to our combined knowledge base, please share your data.

Looking on Topix, there's a document titled "JLR 17 54 10_2E - Land Rover Tyre Information - Approvals" - no 255 tyre listed for Defender but only other models:

Fullfat - are you positive Dan advised a 255/85/16 is a standard lr option on this wheel; indeed are you sure it's safe? I would have thought a 7 inch rim would be a minimum requirement?

Am I positive that's what Dan said, yes absolutely , As for is he is correct? I have no reason to doubt his word,
Is it safe on the 6.5 rim ? my tyre fitter had no issues with it whatsoever and I trust his judgement 100%.
BFG state a rim size on there web page of 6.5 - 8 for a 255.
From what I have researched it seems common enough.

My main concern was the wheel studs length, but after looking at the steel wheels at the main dealer today none of them have any thread showing past the head of the nut and the chap I spoke to said they were perfectly safe and normal practice.

Regardless I will be changing them next week to longer ones as I'm uncomfortable with it and I'm guessing these HD wheels are thicker then the standard steel wheels.

They are bloody big wheels though!!!

Cheers.

I think the standard option is 235/85, I am not aware that LR has ever offered 255/85 as either standard or optional fitment, but it is an attractive size for a Defender. It should be OK on an HD rim though it is wider than recommended for the rim. I have a set of 245/75 BFG muds on genuine Wolf rims on a trailer and they fit fine and look right.

There are many people including me running 285/75 tyres on Boosts, which is more extreme than 255/75 on Wolfs, without problems.

Thanks for the clarification, just looked at their website. Apologies if I sounded like a prophet of doom.

Get some photos of them mounted, I'm surethey will look fantastic Thumbs Up

On the longer stud issue, it does seem that lr do not use them when fitting the hd wheels from the factory; and the wording in the army instruction when swapping this out was to the effect it did look funny but was legal and safe.

oh - and any chance of an all up weight, I see the website states 54.5 (assume this is lbs).

Supercat do you want the weight with the tyre or just the rim?

Many thanks to Fullfat for following up regarding earlier request.

I have now managed to get my hands on an example of a new Wolf "Military Spec Steel Wheel"rim from AllMakes4X4/TerrafirMa4X4 this evening for a bit of an examination. This wheel rim seems to be available for between about £54 to £66 including VAT.

The rim itself has no markings to indicate the ANR4583PM code (the PM suffix is for a primer paint finish) but what it does have clearly stamped into the metal is the following legend "6.5J X 16 5 X 165 ET 20 1500KGS". So this version is clearly supplied as the 1500 Kg rated wheel rim - not the lightweight cheapo copy.

To compare it with other forum members wheel rims - these ones tip the (bathroom) scales at 17 Kgs and like others the steel thickness (at the centres) appears to be between 7.5mm and 8.0mm.

The downside of the version sitting in front of me is that it comes in a primer finish - so like Fullfat, buyers will require to factor in the cost of getting them painted an appropriate colour. Another point of note is what looks like weld splatter under the primer - this rim hasn't undergone a very sophisticated finishing process as part of the production process.

Trust this helps other potential purchasers build up a accurate picture of what is available to purchase.
