4 wks ago My dealer has told me of a memo they have from Landrover , saying that production will continue as normal until 2019 and 20th Dec 2015 is no longer final . Any truth ?

I'd say that is nonsense.
Why would they do that for a yearly production of around 14000 vehicles.

So What is Euro 6 legislation:-

■ It becomes mandatory in September 2015
Average CO2 emissions need to fall below 130g/km across a car company's entire range
■ It does not stop you buying a higher-emitting performance model or 4x4

So as Land Rover produce more greener vehicles their average CO2 drops, as a result the not so green Defender could stay in production as long as the average CO2 of the vehicles they produce does not go above 130g/km

Ironic really the new fangled Land Rover posh 'green' cars with their fancy electrics and silly low profile tyres could well be the vehicles that keep the Defender in production.

Andrew - whilst what you say is correct in terms of requirements on vehicle manufacturers, i do not think that it is the gist of what Euro 6 is about.

Euro 6 legislation, comes into effect in two stages:

1st September 2014 for new type approval vehicles; and
1st January 2015 for first registration (entry into service) of existing, previously type-approved vehicles.

An additional delay of one year is allowed for goods transport vehicles (category N1, classes II and III, and category N2) and vehicles designed to fulfil specific social needs.

it is the latter date that impacts us with existing defender production.

The Euro 6 standard is applicable to each and every model off the production line and the two major changes over Euro 5 relate to NOx down to 0.125 g/km from 0.28 g/km and HC & NOx emissions down to 0.215 g/km from 0.35 g/km. Carbon monoxide (CO) & particulate matter (PM) remain the same. I've quoted the figures for N1 class III vehicles.

Interestingly, I have read that in addition to complying with the emission limits mentioned above, vehicle manufacturers must also ensure that devices fitted to control pollution are able to last for a distance of 160 000 km. In addition, conformity must be checked for a period of 5 years or over a distance of 100 000 km. I wonder if you would have a claim against LR for a failed cat or dpf if outside of warranty they failed under this mileage?

From now on, every cover of LRO will proclaim “New Defender - Latest Pics” only to show on page 26 or wherever, the usual artist’s impression of what it could/should/might look like.

They will NEVER break JLR’s embargo, the first pics of the real thing will come from outside the UK.

And don’t hold your breath for anything special on the current model’s “Final Edition”, the deadlines for Type Approval, homologation etc. have long passed.
