2008 Defender leaking fuel

My new 2008 Defender leaks diesel when filled to the brim.Could this be from the breather for the tank?If so can I remedy it short of putting in slightly less fuel?.
The dealer has offered to remove the tank and check hoses etc., but if I can avoid this I would.Leaking stops when a little fuel is used.Never had bother filling the Tdi to the brim.Breather was probably different though.
I am talking about filling it to the brim to gauge mph etc.Should I just stop when the nozzle switches off?
Apart from that the TDCi is a fine machine.-Thanks.

Funny enough i had this the other day !

noticed all the muck on my back box looked wet and oily ? as its under the breather i put it down to this ? i am yet to extend the hose as a DIY fix for the water in filter problem that seems to be causing some ammount of grief !!!!!!!!!!!

And i brimmed mine also as i was going on a long journey ! stopping on the first click will more than likely remedy this !

And yes a fine machine indeed.......... Mr. Green

Mine never leaks on full - i wonder is the filler clips tight? - it would be a way to exhaust out of the breather.

I have just been out to check things.I found the breatherhose. It is on the drivers side at the top of the tank.It turns in a u-bend and points backwards. The tank and breatherhose are much lower than the filerneck.Looks like that is the culprit.Must just stop filling when the nozzle clicks. Not the brightest idea Land Rover everhad.Must get it extended and routed up to the bulkhead.
Drained the fuel filter while I was at it.Got the cover off ok but it was a little fiddly to get back on.Nothing but diesel came out with some brown stuff floating in it.It was'nt water.
Last week while on our holidays we drove four over 4 hours in some horrendously wet conditions-water everywhere.Did'nt seem to get any water sucked in.The tank ran low after the wet spell before I filled her up,so water ingress does not seem to be an issue.Hosing her down might prove different but so far so good. But I still hope to get the breather hose extended though.
Pity they did'nt fit a bigger tank as there seems to be lots of room between the tank and the bracket above it.
This is a fine machine which drives beautifully.Nothing is perfect!

Ive had fuel an inch from the white at the filler neck when i am planning to go on a long run and it never leaks, so it seems odd that yours leaks.

I often go beyond the clicks (as the clicks dont work on mine)

The fuel wasn't an inch from the white it was brimming !

If its FULL to the brim and needs to vent surely it would come out of the breather ?
It seems perfectly normal to me ? and not odd at all.
I dont think its actually leaking as oposed to venting.

It cant be that much anyway as i,ve just returned 347 miles to the tank FULL. Towing a trailer 125 Miles to location pootling round for several days then 125 miles back with trailer on.
And its not a little trailer either.

If it was that high and needed to vent it could do this through the cap though - you should never go hight than the white mark as this is the point were the filler meets the pipes

Just filled her up-very gently. Not quite to the brim but just an inch or so below it.Guess what?-no leakage!Must be just so far you can go.

Just had a brain wave - of course it leaks if you go that high Idea Idea Idea there is a breather ring there (look underneath and you will see the second pipe) when you drive along i be it sloshes!

As for the 5p off thats only about £3 from a full tank so i wouldnt worry Thumbs Up
