Glow plugs?
Hi Folks,

My 110 2.4tdci approx. 85k miles has started to play up when cold. It starts instantly either with or without using the glow plug timer, but either way when you go to pull away, there is no power, its like its on 2 1/2 cylinders for maybe two or three seconds, then whoosh, big belt of black smoke and we're away.

It only happened first thing in the morning and seems to be worse when its colder.

I'm either guessing that its glow plugs or is there another temperature sensor anywhere?

Is there a simple way to test the plugs or at approx. £12 each do I swap them out to try?

Cheers Keith

Hi Steve,

filter was done in June with oils etc plus major brake overhaul, prior to holiday trip to France.

Runs perfectly otherwise though, just did 80 up the dual carriageway hill out of Monmouth so fuels getting through!

Cheers Keith

never heard of glow plugs causing that sort of thing , seen a lot on transits the wiring burnt out to the plugs due to short on plugs and never known anyone bother to repair it and they still start and run fine

think to be honest on most modern diesels ( in uk ) you could disconnect the plugs and you wouldn't notice a difference maybe in deepest winter not start on the button , but never known a transit not start or run ok with plugs not working

is fuel running back overnight due to air leak ?

Thanks Munch,

How would I know if there was & where would I look for a an air leak into the fuel system?

If there was a leak on the suction side, would it not pull air in all the time so hoofing up the A40 wouldn't be possible?

Cheers Keith

modern diesels can put up with quite a bit of air in diesel , quite often on a diesel with clear pipes you see bubbles going up the pipe and they still run ok

but running back leaves in big long bubble which could be a problem

if you start it let run for a min does it still do it ?

or hold tick over up a bit when first started does it still do it? ( not flat out just up a bit! )

is it down on power or actually misfiring ?

check the filter on tight , easy to tighten to first notch and not to second , give it a twist by hand to make sure

I will try the fast tick over and other bits tomorrow, but yes after the first three seconds it runs superbly. It has always been a bit 'lurchy' at very slow speeds, trickling along through a car park etc. and sometimes smoky especially when cold, first and second gear, but otherwise really sweet.

I'll report back tomorrow!

Thanks again.

Keith

Thanks Munch,

Filter was reluctant to turn but then did another 90 degrees to a definite stop, so hopefully you've cured it!

It started up fine, (but obviously if the filter has been letting air in there would be a fault still today) and picked the revs up, it coughed and spluttered for about 3 seconds and then ran fine, nipped round the block and its great - will try again in the morning.

Cheers Keith

Hi Munch,

Tried it very quickly this morning, unfortunately brought it up to approx 1300 rpm and it still coughed and spluttered for a few seconds, not had chance to drive it yet though....

Best regards

Keith

When the car cough and splut, are the injectors noisy?

If yes should be the fuel filter or the fuel lines partially clogged Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Hi Danielle,

No, no injector noise at all, it coughs and splutters, throws out a load of blue smoke that turns quickly to black smoke and then clears and runs as sweet as a nut.

I'll try and video it in the morning.

Cheers Keith
