As you already mentioned check the battery connections, those symptoms I have had to with my Puma.

Double check your earths, but the most likely candidate will be the starter solonoid either eroded away or contaminated with oil/diesel/or just general crud. If you look down the back corner of the engine on the inlet manifold side, check to see if there's evidence of dampness on the convoluted sheathing on the loom wiring to the starter, it may be that your fuel pressure regulator is leaking which eventually finds its way into the solonoid, the same can occour from the half moon on the back of the rocker cover gasket.
It is possible to take out the plunger on the starter with it still mounted on the vehicle but do make sure you disconnect the battery or take the live feed wire off the starter motor(don't ask me how I know but it was highly entertaining for a minute or two). You can undo the solonoid cover with the 3 x 10mm head set screws then pull out the plunger, taking care of the return spring. Spray the inside contacts, one each side, with contact cleaner and clean the brass part of the plunger. Put it all back together and enjoy trouble free starting. |

Sounds very much like the starter solenoid to me.

It looks decidedly grubby in the general area described, I have ordered the repair kit and will give it a go, together with a good clean.

Another vote for the starter solenoid.
I had this about two months ago, ordered on of the above kits and it's been spot on since. It's an utter b*****d to get the bottom nut off the starter but stick with it! it took me an hour to get it off and 10 minutes to swap over the solenoid and put the starter back on. |

I'm based in Dalry so not too far from you. I've got a Hawkeye if you need diagnostics. Also got various spare parts sitting on my shelf. Where was the clicking coming from, under your seat or engine bay? If it's the engine bay I 2nd what has been said before starter motor solenoid. Fiddly but quite easy to change / service. I found it easier to remove the complete starter to change the solenoid contacts. Best of luck Ruari |

I went through this with my TD5. Changed the starter solenoid contacts that came with a kit. This did help, but failed again. I ended up with a new starter. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thanks guys, I bought the repair kit but won't get the chance to fit it this trip. The clicking was coming from the engine bay, however for the last 3 days or so it has behaved perfectly! I am heading back to Oz on Friday night and apparently painting the front gates and railings are more important than my beloved, so I fitting the kit will have to wait.

Hi all - I'm a newbie here, so sorry to drag this one up again !
I've got a couple of Landies in the garage (does a 64 Series 2a count?) but the 54 plate TD5 has the clicking starter motor problem. Does anybody know if the repairkitsuk bloke is still doing the solenoid contact kits ? I've mailed and called him a couple of times but I haven't heard back. He may well be on holiday but wondered if any of you knew if he was still selling the repair kits ? Any other recommended suppliers would be appreciated too - it's becoming more of a daily bind than an odd mishap now. Cheers up front

There's a brand spanking new Td5 starter for sale in the for sale section (unless it's already gone)
£75 I think. worth it by the time you've faffed about rebuilding yours. edit: Looks like the starter is still there <---- plus a host of other useful Td5 spares! |

Repairkitsuk are still going. I got a set last week from them but I did buy through ebay. I got the kit next day because I ordered before 2pm

i had exactly the same as this and it was electrical contacts in the seat box, i changed both relays as a precaution adn then cleaned and oiled the relay contacts and redid the earth stright to the battery, it now starts first time.
