Clutch Rattle
Hey Guys,

Started noticing that I am getting the same clutch rattle that signals the end of the clutch for Pumas.

Logically, I would say this is also signaling the end of my clutch or is it not as much of a problem for Tdi engined defenders?

Symptoms are:

Start engine, usual rattles and squeaks but noticeable rattle from gearbox area- foot down on clutch and it goes instantly, let go of clutch and rattle rattle rattle.

When in gear is is fine no rattles or bangs or noises so can only assume clutch?

This is its second clutch, original was changed at 98k, this one is now on around 153,305 so has done about 55k Miles which is reasonable.

Any thoughts or comments?

Most likely is a broken spring I would have thought. My last clutch had that, and I ignored it. When I swapped the engine over I changed the clutch as a matter of course, and it had a broken spring.

Only an issue if it falls out, although mine was never going to!

could also be a worn release bearing I guess, but sounds more like the spring. I wouldn't worry about it, unless you're getting the gearbox & engine apart for any other reason.

Diabalo - Good point may be a broken spring, however as you say I don't think it will fall out and if it does will just get stuck to the grungy oily clutch dust and oil mess which is probably all over the inside so i cant see it being a problem.

G-mak - Exactly like mine! Didn't do it at all today, but previous 4 had done!

I think I will wait until it starts giving up or the engine leak gets worse. I have definitely made my mind up to do Rear main oil seal and clutch and gearbox oil seals all at same time so its only dropped once.

Mine's the same, but I'm very much of the opinion that if I ignore it it might go away Embarassed The clutch has only done around 5,000 miles, hence why I didn't bother changing it when I rebuilt the whole vehicle. An engine to TDi for!

Yes I have a similar attitude.

Id say clutch release bearing. My tdi does it and has done for years... Wouldn't be particularly worried about it to be honest.
