Italy 2005 Defender 110 Td5 USW Alpine White
HOT! R380
Shocked I am looking at trying to cool my gearbox. I understand ashcrofts do a kit but would like to hear from people who have done there own.
Is the ftc2104 going to work with the r380?
Can someone suggest part numbers for the solid pipes? ( this would be a great help)

The defender is a 2005 td5 110 on 235/85r16 general grabber tr
Intercooler
Overdrive
Lt230 large cooler sump, temp gauge
Tune ect.
Driven at 60 no problems steady 70 for over an hour the temp rise's significantly (105c when I remembered I had a gauge Rolling Eyes ) then backed off. I have tried with out engaging OD and the temps still climb not just in the transfer box, the metal shaft of the gearstick also gets quite toasty. Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone Sad )

I'd be interested to see how hot my r380 gets when cruising at 85!

I have wondered about cooling myself, I think irb do a kit, I wouldn't have a clue about diy cooling Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I am preping the defender for going back to Italy so just a little concerned with the temp as i was only doing 70mph, when on the continent will be wanting to cruise at 75-80mph @+30c Ner Ner.

Have found these pipes..... don't know whether they would work on the td5 as they are wolf= ESR2749

the block FTC2104 is a "thermostatic" which opens when at the correct temperature, because i don't want to cool the box when driving in the mountains in winter(-16c) Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone Sad )

I have a full wolf setup ready to fit to my Td5 at some point.

You'll find that the pipes need a bit of bending to fit around the engine (although not a huge amount) but fitting the cooler in it's factory position will be awkward, especially if you've got a larger intercooler.

I may end up fitting mine up inside the wing somewhere.

I may also end up chopping off the steel rigid pipework and getting some Goodrich type braided hose in place; will make it far easier to route.

Better just check, a cooler on the r380 will help?
Has anyone had experiance of one?

As for filling I would fill as normal go for a long run an check the level again...(could be wrong!) Range Rover p38 4.6 99 lpg(gone Sad )

There's a thread over on LR4x4 about the very same subject.... (filling with a cooler)

General consensus, and the workshop manual too, states just fill it to the normal level. there's not that much oil in the pipes and cooler, half a pint maybe?

I think that the cooler doesn't empty while changing oil so only after installing you need to run it till warm and then check the level again. You probably need to add a bit at that moment. Roel
