Newbee Defender Puma owner - I think I might have broken it.
Dear all,

I'm new to Puma ownership (2015 2.2 tdci 90), having taken delivery of one 6 weeks ago and absolutely loving it. I'd always hankered after one and thought I'd better take the plunge before they cease production.

Anyhow, I'm in a spot of bother. I've taken the middle fascia panel off a few times and the surround for the instrument panel because I've been upgrading the tweeters and installing a subwoofer - all fine with no incident. However I now find that the heater direction controller (right hand dial) no longer directs air through the face vents, only through the demisters and footwells (albeit to varying degrees depending on which location on the dial its turned to). I've been trawling the web and these forum to see if it's something I've done, checked the control cables(at least the ones I can see) and nothing has made a difference.

I'm completely stumped and wanted to check that it's nothing I'd done before I go back to the garage under warranty. I would really appreciate any help or guidance and apologies for this being my first post...

Thanks in advance!

Just one daft thought.....

...if you have removed that dial at some point during your work on the audio, was it replaced in exactly the same position....or round by one notch? 1970 Series 2A 88"

Hi John and Luke
Not such a daft thought, but I definitely haven't removed it. I might try that though if I don't have any more ideas. This is frustrating the hell out of me - I've been through all the workshop manual and parts catalogue (incidentally, really impressed with the site, all the useful tips and links!)

If the knob still turns as it should but no air comes out from the top vents, then I suspect that the plastic pipe from the heater airbox to the vents has been dislodged from the vent outlet.

The pipe is a quad duct molded thing that passes between the radio and the bulkead.

Check the 2 control cables behind the distribution knob again(in case they "jumped" into another position) and make sure the outer sleeve of the cable is firmly retained on the heater control facia.
After you remove the center facia, undo the bolts that hold the heater controls and check from behind.

Sounds interesting - how fragile is the plastic pipe? I had the fascia off again last night and looking around with the torch, there was nothing obviously dislodged. I'll wait to hear if there's any other ideas from the forum and take another look at the weekend.

I also tried this last night, on the basis that the bowden cables are essentially the same as bicycle brakes and the outer sleeve needs to be held properly. Having undone the control fixings, I can move the distribution dial and see/feel the lever to the side of the airbox below moving as it should. It all looks fine and I continue to be stumped... Defender Puma 2.2 XS 90

The pipe is pretty tough, but it is a failry tight fit on the round dash vents and I have met several vehicles where, as a result, it isn't properly pushed into place and dislodges easily. You may be able to check by sticking your pinkie into the vent and seeing if you can feel a gap between the vent outlet and the pipe.

The flap valve in the heater box which deflects the air between face and screen is on the top of the heater box and is the least accessible of the flaps. Do you get air out of the widnscreen vents? If you do, does it stop/reduce when you select the face vents?

I strangely get air from the windscreen vents when I select face. Turning it dial position 2 (moving clockwise around the dial), lots of air to legs and less to windscreen. Position 3 is pretty much the same as 1, and 4 is balls out demisting the windscreen. Current setup definitely biased towards never having a misted windscreen!

Interested in what you were saying about the top direction flap. Can you give me a bit more info about what I'm looking for?

Thanks for this! Defender Puma 2.2 XS 90

Yes but where's the fun in that? Wink

I am prepared to go back to the dealer but would love to solve this. Just determined I guess and like problem solving. This might have been one of the motivating factors for buying a Puma.... Defender Puma 2.2 XS 90

It is beginning to sound as though you either have a fault with the heater control knob assembly or with the cable connection to the top flap. In either case, the best advice is probably to get it sorted under warranty - it is very unlikely that it is a consequence of what you've been doing.

The heater control panel is readily accessible with the centre part of the facia removed, and can itself then be removed, although it is quite fiddly. The problem with this panel is that it is only available as an assembly and is unbelievably expensive (several hundred pounds). The control knobs also operate a complicated arrangement of plastic cams which can break (this may be your problem).

The top flap of the heater box is simple but is connected to its operating cable via a relatively flimsy arrangement which has been known (albeit unusually) to break. To acces this it is necessary to revome the entire dash assembly from the car, ie steering wheel, IPAC, centre console, and then the whole moulded dash unit, then the heater can be removed. Not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not sensible if you're under warranty I'd suggest.

It'll look like something this (photo taken from one of AndrewS's threads):-

Nice to see another Guern around! Not that I have any relevant input to your problem!

Don't know if you're new to Land Rovers or just new to the puma and although you're well inside your warranty, if you haven't heard of him already and have any other issues/need a service etc Ben Greenway of BG Automotive up at Pleinmont is a land rover specialist and good bloke too. Much more knowledge and interest than Jacksons on the land rover front in my opinion!
