2001 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Epsom Green
Diesel Type
Still loving the old girl!!!! Mr. Green

Brimmed my old Td5 always fill at about halfway (£50 odd quid)- last few times filled it with shell premium diesel or supreme... The higher grade diesels. Does this make the engine run too hot? Cause and damage to manifold, cylinder heads etc?

I know they are designed to run on shoddy diesel, but is too rich of a mix damaging the engine? Does seem to run smoother and go faster (very slightly).....

Maybe it's a placebo for the extra per litre and what I'd like to feel?

Thoughts? 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.

Not exactly true,td5 injectors are quite sensitive to "dirty" fuel. And you really dont wanna buy 1 of them, let alone 5.Opinions are very divided on the subject,so feel free to chip in one of the threads (or even vote) Thumbs Up . Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

V-Power Diesel in mine all the time. Or a premium if I can't find a shell (dont get the point or the little lego car then though).

Just runs a bit cleaner and smoother to my eye! Higher MPG to, but whether or not it negates the extra cost, I dont know. I do have the opinion that it keeps the injectors in better nick though, but again, that can be argued left right and centre!

I firmly believe that modern diesels (from Td5 onwards) have never been designed for shoddy fuels... quite the opposite in fact.

The Tdi can run on fairly naff stuff, even avgas (I think) but as Jimbob says, modern engines are a bit like thoroughbred racehorses... everything needs to be squeaky clean!

I am told that the additive of premium diesel fuel breaks down fairly rapidly with age (a bit like the old 4 star petrol used to) So to derive any benefit first you have to know how long it has been stored in the fuel station tanks and then how long you store it in your own fuel tank before its used.

The best option and also the cheapest (after all Premium fuel demands a premium price) is to add a fuel additive such as millers every time you fill up.

I always run my Td5 on supermarket fuel with the occasional Comma diesel magic to keep the system clean, fuel filter replaced every other service.

All the Td5 development work was done running the engines on kerosene ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

Just a fifth gear review I saw of the puma and Tom ford said it was designed to run on shoddy fuel. Ah well I can afford it I'll just put premium stuff in. 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.
