me heeds off!! opinions please
long standing issue with coolant loss and white smokey zorst.
decided to take the head off to investigate as everyone seemed to be pointing to gasket failure.
now when i removed the intercooler to inlet pipe it was quite wet in there! couldnt tell if it wasa coolant but it was definitely more than just oil!
so when the rocker cover came off, there was a fair bit of coolant in the rocker!!!
anyhoo head is now off and the gasket looks fine! zort ports are nice and sooty so coolant not been washing down them.
here are some pics, no cleaning has been done, pics taken as things came off!!

Silly question but has it rained recently?

How is the oil? does the oil show any white emulsified oil in it from mixing with coolant?

There shouldn't be any coolant at all in the rocker cover as it doesn't have any coolant point in it.
However it could indicate that there is a crack in your head which when running opens up and has allowed coolant from a coolant gallery into the rocker cover.

Do you have access to a endoscope? Might be worth poking it down all the passages and looking for hairline cracks. You would be amazed how small a crack can leak when under pressure.

The head gasket also looks quite new so perhaps it has had similar problems in its past life?

On the plus side, your bores look beautiful, still clearly see the honing marks so that looks sound Thumbs Up

Coolant and oil can also mix in the radiator, if there is a split between the water and oil sections.

if you get it faced , make sure they take the minimum off

some places will just set machine to surface say 5-10 thou first cut to save time

get them to do cut 2 thou first cut or less

that's if it needs it , if it has not got hot it may be ok

while i had it in bits, i decided to remove inter cooler aand associated pipes and separator for a good cleaning in paraffin.
Also drained coolant from rad and heater matrix and gave them a good flush!

finally all back together after waiting for a few odd parts. nearly 3 weeks off the road ouch!
started after 4 turns AND i didn't charge batt while it was off so batt seems to be fine.

can anyone help me understand the cooling system?

rad, engine and H matrix were all emptied and flushed. followed rave on refill procedure.
but what i want to know is this: is the engine running without ANY coolant until the stat kicks in to let water into engine? OR is it the other way round. when i fill the system coolant can naturally get into the engine jacket and the stat lets it out? im expecting the header to drop as ive only put 10 ltrs in and it takes 11, also havent had stat kick in yet cos the bloody thing doesnt want to get any hotter than 71 deg!!! (think stat opens at 77deg)

it just feels wrong letting engine get so hot with no coolant in the block.
thoughts??? My 109 thread

if you didnt drain the block there may still be some old coolant in there hence feeling short by 1L

wpump circulates it around lump, when stat opens it allows greater flow through the rad. Cheers
