Gearbox regular clatter and whining
This has just started with our 2003 TD5. It is most obvious in 5th, where the whirring is very clear, but you can also hear it in 3rd (mostly just the clatter and a bit of a grind), and sometimes in 2nd too. With 4th you cannot hear it. The clatter is regular and rises with revs. Interestingly it is not as obvious when starting cold, but starts to appear after a while. I'm not sure if anyone would notice it in a modern cocooned car.

Based on other posts I've seen this would seem to point to the gearbox bearings going. My question is: is there any way to tell how close to failure it is? I was supposed to be doing a 400km roundtrip tomorrow and Tuesday, and now I'm not sure whether to risk it or not.

The gearbox in mine was doing this for the first 4000 miles that I owned it before I had the box changed, at the point of change there was so much vibration coming through the box that you couldn't keep your hand on the gearstick once you got above 40mph.
