Chile 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Chawton White
2nd gear MT82
Hi Guys

I´ve been feeling a bit concern (or became hypochondriac) when shifting up/down to 2nd gear in normal street conditions. It doesn`t sound like an old series, but I can feel in my hand certain difficulty. I can not really recall if I had this since the begining but for me is the synchro going bang.

Any of you guys has this issue?

thanks

I think its a live with it thing at this time. Mine has had it from new,now done 9000kms. Had gearbox change (noise issues) Modified clutch due to rattle and chatter at low speeds. I still have 1st to 2nd issue with the gearbox but believe it may be a very slow synchro. If I slow the change or double clutch no problems. Time will tell.

Hallo Guys,
This is my first posting. Its great to know there is a Defender forum.
I have the same problem with 2nd gear. I have taken it back for a test drive with the dealers twice. But they not too concerned. I did mention the clutch issue to them but they said no, its not the same thing. It just does not feel right in your hand when you select 2nd gear, it almost scratches sometimes. They said they can replace the gearbox but that is up to me.?
Dont know what to do.

Mine goes in next Tuesday for the same thing. It is difficult on engage 2nd and 3rd gear on the upshift.

The change was OK for about the first 1700 miles but now seems to be getting worse.

Niel, get it replaced. Got to be worth a try. As someone said over here, its the only vehicle he has had that gets newer the longer he has it!!!!!

But Defender is still so new, only 3000km's on it. I think I will drive it to 10000km and then take it back for a new one if the problem still persists. And as you say, then i will have a new gearbox again !!!! Puma 110 sw White

Just checked my chassis number and it starts 9A780... well after the range specified on the TB - that is not to say that my vehicle does not have an older clutch fitted knowing the problems LR have had with parts.

Going to be an interesting visit to the dealers next week !

Mine is a 2008 SVX, 12 months old next month and only 4000km at box change. Get the new box, if it is the same gear change problem you have 2 yearsfor LR to fix it. You may be lucky, my second box is much better than the one they replaced. The old one, when cold had trouble with 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd. I still think its due to such a low 1st gear and slow syncro. Having not driven a Transit (God Forbid) I have no Idea of what this box is like in other guises so I may be wrong.

Allan

That sums the problem up nicely !

When cold the change from 1st to second and 2nd to third is exactly as if the syncro has gone.
After 10 minutes driving it does get better but it is still notchy.

Mine seem to be a slightly different issue. I does not make a differance hot or cold, this morning I even tried it in low range and it still difficult from 1st to 2nd. Puma 110 sw White

I would get it looked at in that case. Its probably more evident in low range is it?
